International. Contemporary. Art.
More than 150 artists; from as far away as Japan, Russia, Argentina and India, will join others from across Europe and those working in the city itself to show a diverse collection of striking contemporary art on a scale not seen before in the city. Between them they will present paintings, sculpture, photography, printmaking, illustrations and bespoke crafts, in a dazzling array of talent.
Visitors to the free event will be able to admire the collections, meet the artists who created them and buy pieces for their home, garden or work place. They will also be able to witness artists at work and add their vote to the Oxford International Art Fair Awards which celebrate the best artists on show at the exhibition. In launching the art fair, Joelle Dinnage from organisers The Global Art Agency said that the inspiration for the event was the artists themselves.
“For the past two years we’ve held art fairs for home-grown artists in the lovely setting of The Fishes pub at North Hinksey, where we had an amazing response from artists and visitors alike. We also had a lot of artists from outside the UK wanting to come to Oxford and get involved,” she explained.
“Having successfully held international art fairs in other cities in Europe, including Amsterdam, Barcelona and Vienna with my colleagues from the agency, we asked ourselves whether Oxford could do the same. The answer was a resounding yes. Interest from artists around the globe flooded in and we secured a fabulous venue in Oxford Town Hall. Now we’re setting the scene for art lovers to come along and enjoy a fantastic free day out, viewing the fine pieces on display and learning the stories behind them from the people who created them.”
Visitors will also be able to buy original one-off pieces directly from the artist, with something to suit everyone’s taste whether they are first-time buyers or seasoned collectors. A special private viewing of the art fair takes place from 6 to 9pm on the evening of Friday 7th December, when art lovers can enjoy a sneak preview of the event and get the first opportunity to buy. Tickets for this special evening which includes live music, a glass of fine Juvé y Camps Catalan cava and a copy of the 2014 art fair catalogue cost just £7. Ticket holders can also come along to the network party at The Living Room at Oxford Castle, from 8pm onwards on Saturday 8th February, for an evening of socialising and networking with like-minded people who love art.
A series of awards will be made during the course of the art fair, recognising both artist and gallery. A panel of judges including curators, gallery owners and collectors from the Oxford art scene will decide which artist wins the accolade of Best Oxford International Art Fair Artist 2014. Art fans everywhere can also get involved in the competition by voting online at www.facebook.com/GlobalArtAgency
Expressionist painter Souren Mousavi is just one of the award-winning artists whose work will be on show at the fair. Born in Iran, she was once was arrested and punished for her art and beliefs. Her work, which is influenced by Klimt, Dali, Picasso and particularly Kahlo, features strong watercolours, distinctive oils and acrylics as well as drawings, and is a must-see at the event. Global Best Artist Award winner 2013 John ‘Josimo’ Paterson will also present paintings of Asian inspired figurative nude females, intensely passionate pieces.
“Oxford has not witnessed such a wealth of artistic international talent under one exceptionally beautiful roof, so this really is not to be missed,” added Joelle. “Come and visit on Friday night for a VIP private viewing, Saturday for live painting and Sunday for the award ceremony, with plenty of inspiration in between,”
