International. Contemporary. Art.
Chaney Trotter is an oil painter and installation artist from Houston, Texas. She studied Fine Arts at The University of Southern California, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Florence University for the Arts before obtaining her Masters degree from Parsons The New School for Design. Her work consists primarily of oil painting and installation, utilizing both organic and manmade objects into totemic environments that create contemporary mythologies around the subject. She continues to develop this series out of her studio in Long Island City, New York.
How would you describe yourself…? And your artwork…?
I am a mythology-loving creature enthusiast, and my artwork emerges from this personal realm. I aim to create interactions between contemporary figures and modern totems, illustrating a complex synergy of forces that struggle with one another, but appear to balance each other just the same. I feel that as humans in a post-humanist environment we are often faced with oppositions between science and mysticism, without really exploring the powerful, enriched kind of fusions that can exist harmoniously in both worlds. The figures I paint, and the projected entities that surround them, live in that space in between.
I know my artwork is finished when…?
I’ve never truly felt like an artwork was finished…I’ve only felt like it became gravely important to move on.
Best Commissioned artwork ever done was…?
I was commissioned to create an interactive light piece in NYC that consisted of a live grass enclosure, with a network of pulsing ‘veins’ sprouting from within. The veins shone white, yet when a sensor was touched by the viewer, they began to pulse deep red in sync with the pulse of a heartbeat. The piece was titled ‘Murmur’ and was shown at Lightbox NYC in January of 2015.
Which are your favorite artists…?
Leonora Carrington, Aubrey Beardsley, Olafur Eliasson, Doug Wheeler, Henri Rousseau, Martin Wittfooth, Henry Darger, Robert ParkeHarrison, and Evelyn De Morgan to name a few.
Would love to exhibit my work in …?
The International Space Station. I’m serious.
